Sabrina Ionescu is a four-time All-Star, Olympic gold medalist and was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft. But her journey hasn’t been all highlight reels and smooth sailing. Her path is a testament to perseverance, mental toughness and the ability to rise stronger after setbacks.
Low Point: The Injury That Nearly Stalled Everything
Just three games into her professional career, Ionescu suffered a Grade 3 left ankle sprain against the Atlanta Dream. As a result, Ionescu was sidelined for the remainder of her rookie season.
Despite only playing two full games, the league didn’t consider her eligible to repeat her rookie season. Although Ionescu considered the 2021 season to be her rookie year, she lost the opportunity to compete for Rookie of the Year – an award that she was favored to win.
Turning Point: The Bounce Back
Nine months after the injury, Ionescu returned: "I'm definitely excited to get back on the court and start playing again," Ionescu said. "I've been awaiting this time for a while now after being hurt last season. So I'm really excited to just start playing, for games to start and fans to be in the arena."
In just her sixth career WNBA game, she made history. She tallied 26 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds and became the fastest player to record a triple-double in league history.
It was a statement to anyone who doubted her recovery. She didn't just return to the court. She returned better.
What Happened Next: Becoming a Star and a Symbol
Over the next two seasons, Ionescu evolved into one of the league’s premier playmakers and three-point shooters, even breaking records for most threes in a season. See her stats here.
She has now played in three All Star games and is headed to the 2025 All-Star Game next.
