đŸŽŸ Parents + Coaches: Knowing Your Lane

In a recent Youth Inc. interview, our Tennis Ambassador John Isner sat down with legendary coach, player, and dad Bryan Shelton — and Bryan shared one of the wisest takes I’ve ever heard about the parent–coach dynamic.

When John asked how parents should work with their child’s coach, Bryan said (paraphrasing):
“A parent’s role is to help in the character development of their young athlete. That’s where parents should really reside.”

Then he expanded:
✅ Is your kid treating others with respect?
✅ Taking responsibility or making excuses?
✅ Giving eye contact when speaking with others?
✅ Saying thank you to the tournament director/referee?

“Those are the things that are really, really, really important,” Bryan said.
“Trust the coach. Leave the technical parts of the sport to them.
Parents should focus on character development.”

Simple. Grounded. True.

And a reminder that sports are as much about who our kids become as what they achieve.

That’s the real scoreboard.
Trust the coach.
Raise good humans.
