We are in a data-driven era. Professional and college teams use highly advanced data tracking systems to optimize training, practice and performance. These systems have typically come at such a high price point that they weren’t used in youth sports, but that is changing.

As technology has improved, more companies have entered the marketplace making products more affordable and tailored to youth sports. One such company is PlayerData, which has produced a team pack for youth sports teams, which includes vests, tiny, state-of-the-art GPS trackers and a portable live data receiver that is slightly larger than a credit card.

PlayerData hasn’t sacrificed any of the technology or capabilities for affordability. In addition to more than 50,000 athletes and 1,500 clubs using their products, PlayerData also has clients that include the Crystal Palace Football Club, the Philadelphia Union, Air Force football, Davidson basketball and IMG Academy.

The company’s Edge Air system allows tracking of distance, speed, sprints, accelerations, deceleration, workload and more. The data is transmitted to an app, where athletes and coaches have instant access to data. There is also an optional receiver that allows coaches access to live metrics during games or practices.

“The Edge Air represents a generational leap in this category by being the first to combine indoor and outdoor tracking in a unit that is a half of the size of anything else on the market,” said co-founder Roy Hotrabhavanon. “We’ve also managed to be able to keep this product available at an accessible price point, a feat that seemed almost impossible not long ago."

Fit for travel, the Edge air system is easily transportable. The 30-unit carrying case can fit in the seatback pocket of an airplane. A 25-unit system costs under $5,000.

PlayerData was founded by Hotrabhavanon in 2017 to give youth sports organizations the ability to track data at an affordable price. The product is available for soccer, football, basketball, lacrosse, field hockey, rugby and volleyball with plans to expand to other sports.
