Meet Ref Rob: Five Questions with Youth Inc's Officiating Ambassador

Rob Wann, known courtside as "Ref Rob" is a basketball referee who gained fans on social media for his officiating style, personality, and teaching moments. He is known to explain his calls, educate players on the rules, and offer commentary, specifically in AAU settings. Throughout his career, Wann has served at the high school, college, and semi-professional level.
We asked Rob five questions about his youth sports experience, life lessons, and more.
1. What’s your favorite youth sports memory?
Winning the 14U AAU State Championship will always stand out for me. Back then, AAU basketball wasn’t nearly as common as it is today. These days, almost any kid can play travel ball, but at the time, there were only about 40–50 teams in the entire state. You were truly going up against the best of the best, and coming out on top was an unforgettable feeling.
2. Who has been the most influential person or coach in your life?
I’ve had some great coaches through high school and college, but the biggest influence in my life has been my wife. She’s helped me see situations in a much more positive light and changed my perspective in the best way.
3. What’s one lesson you’ve learned through your sport that has shaped your life?
I have learned to always put your best foot forward. Play to win, but have the humility to accept defeat.
4. What advice would you give to your 10-year-old self?
I would tell my 10-year-old self to learn to listen more and speak less.
5. What is a motto or belief that you live by?
I live by the belief that you should treat people the way you want to be treated.
