Meet Aaron West: Five Questions with Youth Inc.'s Boys' Soccer Ambassador

Aaron West, a former Davidson College soccer player, has built a successful career in sports media, working with major outlets like FOX Sports, Paramount and CBS Sports. As a father, former athlete and passionate advocate for the game, he shares his insights and experiences daily across his social channels.
We asked Aaron West five questions about the memories, mentors and mindsets that have shaped his journey through sports.
1. What is your favorite youth sports memory?
My favorite youth sports memory was driving to and from practices with my dad. I lived outside of Chapel Hill and played for a select team in Raleigh, which meant about an hour commute each way. During those drives, my dad and I would listen to NPR, which helped shape my world view. Thanks to my dad's relaxed approach to sports, this time spent in the car was very calm and pressure-free. As a result, I never felt any negative pressure in sports.
2. Who has been the most influential person or coach in your life?
My dad is the most influential person in my life. He not only helped me develop athletically, but also taught me how to stay even-keeled and handle adversity—lessons that extended well beyond sports.

3. What's one lesson that you've learned through your sport that has shaped your life?
One of the most impactful lessons I have taken from sports is the ability to deal with adversity. This ability to respond to challenges is my biggest strength in all aspects of life.
4. What advice would you give to your 10-year-old self?
I would teach my 10-year-old self the skill of resilience. He believes it is a lesson that will carry you through all stages of life.
5. What is a belief or motto that you live by?
I live by the belief that resilience is your greatest skill. It is not about how talented or athletic you are, but about how you handle things thrown at you and push through them.
